Unsure whether to purchase the new Korn album?posted Aug 2nd 2007, 4:03PM
Mood: ALIVE!
Music: Guess.
I just bought it today. Even though I've only gotten about halfway through the album so far, I feel like I've definitely gotten my money's worth.
Those of you who have not listened to Korn since the 90's will be shocked by the differences in the band's style. All bands evolve over time, but Korn's style has changed more drastically than most over the years. The band's previous album, See You on the Other Side, had an eerie, classically-inspired feel reminiscent of a dark Wonderland of sex and insanity--a far cry from the gritty urban sound that made Korn a success in the beginning. Many long-time fans considered it too polished for Korn. Still, SYOTOS was one of the band's better albums, and I personally ranked it second only to Issues. (As I described it to a friend upon the first hearing: "It's like the music is f**king my ears--and I like it!")
Well, with [Untitled], Korn has combined the new style of SYOTOS with its original style and made it work. "Bitch, We've Got a Problem" is one of the best examples--the new album is worth buying for this song alone. [Untitled] manages to blend urban, rap-inspired beats with classically-inspired musical phrases and jarring electronic effects. And as always, Jonathan Davis's tortured lyrics, unapologetic and devoid of polish, tie everything together into a mind-blowing whole.
The only real mistake Korn made with this album is not giving it a title, or at least not printing the word "Untitled" on the front as an example of irony. The band's first album had no title, and leaving their most recent album untitled as well sets the stage for confusion. But [Untitled] is definitely one of Korn's better albums, and if you've been waiting for a new Korn album that revisits the band's roots, this is it.
